Hues of Jean Metzinger’s “The Seashore” tint the Gypsophila petals commonly known as baby’s breath in an attempt to reflect the impressionist’s brushstrokes. Lissette Wyche’s floral artwork sits directly in front of the painting so that a viewer could compare the two.
This spring, Newfields is offering many new art experiences such as the reopening of the Clowes Pavillion and the opening of “Embodied” [a new exhibition]. In early April, the Indianapolis Museum of Art hosted an event called “Art in Bloom” where they invited various floral designers to create and showcase a piece inspired by artwork already on display.
“I want viewers to look at my arrangement and see each petal as a brush stroke,” Wyche said. “The silk at the bottom represents the ocean.”
The weekend consisted of a film screening, orchid classes, jewelry making, artist demos among other events. Deborah Summers with a Bride’s choice florist hosted a demonstration on Saturday, April 2. She was a participant in Art in Bloom last year as well as this year.
“Creating the floral design is an opportunity to be creative and innovative,” Summers said. “It’s exciting to break from my work as an event and wedding florist.”
Summers, like many other floral artists, got a chance to meet with other artists and the public through demonstrations like these. Doysha Chanel with Raw Flower Design also taught a class on planting a succulent garden. Her piece was modeled after Fernando Brizio’s work “Painting a Fresco with Giotto #3.”
“The most rewarding part of the creation experience will forever remain the same,” Chanel said. “Each time I am gifted to create, I become one with the design. It is a feeling that is indescribable and I am so grateful. I am absolutely in love with the art of flowers”

Students of IUPUI can attend similar events of this nature for free utilizing their annual student memberships. These can be obtained by bringing their student IDs into the museum to sign up. When students have access to their memberships, they will get updates on more spring events coming soon to Newfields.
