The IUPUI Men’s Soccer team secured a huge non-conference win against the Cincinnati Bearcats 1-0 Tuesday evening, improving their overall record to 4-7-1.
From the opening kick, the Jaguars were on the attack early and they didn’t look back from there. Matthew Skaar, a junior, got things going early as his first shot nearly found the back of the net seven minutes in. The Jaguars would not let off the gas, firing off three shots within the first fifteen minutes of the match and that was something that head coach Brian Barnett was looking for in his team.
“When you press and when you start to turn teams over, then that generates a collective energy,” Barnett said. “We were able to ride that wave.”
The Jaguars finished the half with six total shots, with two of those shots on target and controlled possession of the ball for just over half of the time in the first half.
Things started to get very sloppy in the second half. In the 47’, the Jaguars were called for a foul inside the penalty area, which led to a crucial penalty kick for the Bearcats. Quinn McCallion, a sophomore, was able to come up with a huge stop on the penalty kick that kept the score nodded at zero.
The sloppy play continued as the Bearcats gave up four fouls within the first five minutes that would eventually lead them into huge trouble. In the 50’, the Jaguars got the opportunity they had been looking for all night long. The Jaguars were able to draw a foul right outside the penalty area, which led to an IUPUI free kick just outside the box. Cameron Peterson, a junior, seized the opportunity on the free-kick and buried the ball in the back of the net in 50’ for his first collegiate goal to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead early in the second half.
“I was in shock at first,” Peterson said. “It was pure excitement, we just wanted to get out of this slump we’ve been in and today was the perfect night to get my first goal to help the team out.”
Peterson’s lone goal ended up making the difference in the end. On a night where IUPUI did not have their usual starting lineup, Barnett wanted to switch things up and it made a big difference.
“Throughout the season our team’s success has come from it’s collective strength,” coach Barnett said. “We made a decision as a coaching staff that there was a way to get that back and it was through putting more pace in the front part of our group so we can go and press high their team higher of the field, turn them over, and generate some momentum that way. More or less, find that collective strength again, reinitiate that strength in our group.”
The Jaguars have three of their final four games at home, with three of those games being against Horizon League opponents.
The Jaguars will next be in action against UIC on October 26 at Carroll Stadium.

IUPUI Women’s Basketball has had a very successful era with head coach Austin Parkinson at the helm of the team. Heading into his tenth season as coach, Parkinson and the Lady Jaguars look to finally get over the hump and claim their first Horizon League title and make the NCAA Tournament.
The Lady Jags look to build upon last year’s stellar 13-5 conference record and 20-12 record overall. The season eventually came to a close with a loss against Middle Tennessee, 59-47, in the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.
The Horizon League picked the Jaguars to finish third this season, behind last year’s conference champion Green Bay and last year’s regular-season champion Wright State.
Here are the complete team predictions for the 2019-2020 Horizon League season:
Green Bay, Wright State (tied)
IUPUI
Youngstown State
Milwaukee
Northern Kentucky
Cleveland State
Oakland
Detroit Mercy
UIC
The Lady Jags may be picked to finish third in the Horizon League, but their eight returning players from last year’s team that have all had more than their fair share of playing time together.
Macee Williams was named last year’s Horizon League Player of the Year and to the Horizon League First Team. Williams, a junior, averaged 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds and looks to have another strong season for the Lady Jags, as she was named the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year and to the Horizon League Preseason First Team.
Holly Hoopingarner, a senior, averaged 10.6 points and shot 35.1% beyond-the-arc, Hoopingarner will provide leadership as the lone senior on the team. Katelyn O’Reilly, a redshirt junior who averaged 8.6 points and 5.8 rebounds, will also look to have another big season alongside Hoopingarner and Williams.
The Lady Jags added key transfers Destiny Perkins and Rachel McLimore, who will add depth to an already loaded roster of returning players from last season. Both Perkins and McLimore sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, so they’re more than anxious to get on the court for the first time being with the Lady Jags.
Coach Parkinson has another solid roster ready to go for another thrilling college basketball season. Look for the Lady Jags to make a lot of noise throughout the season, especially later in March in the Horizon League Tournament. The Lady Jags will have their work cut out for them, but expect them to be dancing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in their history when it is all said and done.
The Lady Jags open their season with a home exhibition game on October 31 against the Benedictine Eagles and have their first official game on November 5, an important early-season matchup against the Ball State Cardinals at the Jungle.

The IUPUI women’s basketball team won a thriller Tuesday night, defeating the UT Martin Skyhawks on a game-winning 3-pointer by sophomore Sydney Roule that gave the Jaguars the 73-72 win.
Defense was the big story for both teams as they both struggled to shoot the ball. The Skyhawks shot a measly 39 percent from the field and 32 percent behind the 3-point arc. The Jaguars were not much better in the shooting category as they shot 43 percent from the field and 26 percent behind the 3-point arc. The Jaguars imposed their will on the glass, out rebounding the Skyhawks 46-35. The Jaguars struggled to maintain possession of the ball as they committed 23 turnovers, as the Skyhawks pesky full-court press gave the Jaguars fits all night.
Sophomore Macee Williams started off the game with an offensive putback. The Jaguars missed four of their first five shots. After going almost five minutes without a point, redshirt sophomore Katelyn O’Rielly got to the basket for a layup to cut the deficit to 10-5 with 4:45 left in the quarter. With 1:35 left in the quarter, senior Allex Brown hit two free-throws to cut the UT Martin lead to 15-9. The Jaguars trailed 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.
“I just think we need to slow down,” Williams said. “We just over thought it pretty much.”
The Jaguars missed their first four shots in the second quarter. It wasn’t until 6:15 left in the half the Jaguars got their first basket when senior Sydney Hall hit a three to cut UT Martin’s lead to 19-13. Late in the half, the Jaguars used a 9-2 run to take the lead 28-27 heading into the half.
In the second half, it was a back and forth affair. O’Reilly got things going for the Jaguars as she hit a jump shot to tie up the game at 30 with 8:47 left in the quarter. Junior Holly Hoopingarner got into the mix by hitting a three to establish a 40-36 lead with 4:42 left in the quarter. The Jaguars would eventually lose the lead on a 3-point shot by Maddie Waldrop of UT Martin. The Skyhawks would take a 54-51 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the final quarter of play, things ramped up for the Jaguars as they shot 64 percent from the field to help their cause. IUPUI needed this push down the stretch as they were down 7 points with less than four minutes to play in the game. With 13.4 seconds to spare, the Jaguars got a key stop and forced a UT Martin miss. Trailing by two, IUPUI had a chance to tie or win the game. In the final seconds, Coach Austin Parkinson brought sharpshooter Sydney Roule into the game. With 1.2 seconds to spare, Roule hit the game winning shot that gave the Jaguars the 73-72 win.
“Coach P put me in to shoot,” Roule said. “I had the opportunity to shoot the ball, I didn’t shoot great all night, so to make that shot was pretty huge for our team.”
The Jaguars were led in scoring by Williams, who tied her career high with 24 points. Hoopingarner chipped in 15 points and O’Reilly added 13 points. Williams led the way in rebounding with 9 and Hoopingarner pulled down 8.
“I thought our kids hung in there,” Coach Parkinson said. “When we got down with 2:40 to go, we buckled down and got some stops, and we were fortunate enough to make a stop at one end and be able to make that three in the end.”

The IUPUI women’s basketball team opened the 2018-2019 season Tuesday night by cruising past Purdue Northwest by a score of 101-40.
Defense was the big story for the Jaguars as they held the Pride to a measly 25 percent from the field and 15 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. The Jaguars also forced 28 turnovers and imposed their will on the glass, out rebounding the Pride 47-27.
The Jaguars torched the Pride by shooting a blistering 48% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc.
The Jaguars opened the first quarter on an 18-2 run, which asserted their dominance for the remainder of the game. Redshirt Sophomore Katelyn O’Reilly, who sat out the previous season due to NCAA transfer rules, led the way in scoring in the quarter with 11 points, followed by junior Holly Hoopingarner with 7 points, and sophomore Macee Williams with 5 points. The Jaguars led the Pride 31-11 after the first quarter.
The Jaguars continued their dominance in the second quarter, hitting six three pointers while shooting a blistering 62 percent from the field and 60 percent beyond the arc. The Jaguars extended their lead to 59-20 by halftime. For the half, O'Reilly led the Jaguars with 14 points, followed by Senior Sydney Hall with 12 points, and Williams with 9 points.
“I was definitely really excited especially after sitting out after a year,” O’Reilly said. “My teammates really helped me adjust to the speed back from Florida Atlantic. My teammates are definitely the ones I lean on, and their always my motivators to keep going even when I’m tired.”
The Jaguars relied more on the role players in the second half as the starters got their rest. The Jaguars outscored the Pride 23-13 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 82-33.
The starters came back out to open the fourth quarter and IUPUI extended its lead to 88-33 with a free-throw made by Hoopingarner and a layup made by O’Reilly. The starters got an ovation from the home crowd for their efforts as the bench was brought in for the starters.
Coach Austin Parkinson was fairly pleased with his team’s effort, as he has been instilling a defensive-minded gameplan while also wanting the team to get out and run the floor.
“I thought the kids moved the ball incredibly well on offense,” Coach Parkinson said. “We were very unselfish and we shot it really well, and I think this team has the capability of being a really good three pointing shooting team. It was nice to finally see that, because we kinda struggled leading up to today in some of the game atmospheres because we have shot it well in practice.”
The Jaguars had six players score double figures, led by O’Reilly with 22. Hoppingarner and Williams both finished with 14, Hall with 12 , sophomore Morgan Allen added in 11 points, and freshman Briana Mishler chipped in 10 points. Senior Allex Brown led the Jaguars in rebounding with 9 and O’Reilly added 6 rebounds as well.
The Jaguars hit the road Friday, Nov. 9 for an important early season matchup vs. Ole Miss.

Excitement is in the air as the IUPUI Women’s Basketball team gets set to start another exciting season. The Jaguars look to build on last season’s 13-5 conference record and 22-10 overall. That season eventually ended with a close loss to Purdue, 48-46, in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
The Horizon League picked the Jaguars to finish second this season, behind last year’s conference champion Green Bay.
Here are the complete team predictions for the 2018-2019 season:
Green Bay
IUPUI
Wright State
Youngstown State
Milwaukee
Northern Kentucky
Oakland
Cleveland State
Detroit Mercy
UIC
Head coach Austin Parkinson is heading into his ninth year at the helm of the basketball program and is excited about the squad that he has this season.
“We’re trying to figure out what our identity is with this basketball team,” Parkinson said. “I think we have some talented players and I think we can score the ball. We’re solid defensively and we’re going to develop some toughness. We could have a pretty good season.”
Among the returning players for the Jaguars is Macee Williams, who was named the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year and to the Horizon League Preseason First Team. Williams, a sophomore, averaged 13 points and 7.7 rebounds per game last season. Even with the numbers she put up last year and the preseason honors she’s been awarded, Williams isn’t letting the expectations get to her head.
“I would say it’s more of a motivational thing for me,” Williams said. “There’s a bunch of talent in the Horizon League and it just makes me want to work harder to the point where that I want to push myself everyday to where I need to be.”
The Jaguars are also led by a trio of seniors in Sydney Hall, Alex Brown, and Tamya Sims. Hall and Sims played a significant role for the Jaguars last season. Hall averaged 8.5 points and 1.1 assist per game, while Sims averaged 10.7 points and hauled in 5.6 rebounds per game, which earned her a spot on the Horizon League Preseason Second Team.
IUPUI will lean on the inside-out tandem of Hall and Williams to strike fear into the hearts of the rest of the Horizon League. Hall’s shooting and Williams’ post presence makes for a dangerous duo.
“It would definitely be really important,” Hall said. “Macee is obviously the best player in the league as they said with the preseason conference title she got there. It’s a big focus for our team to play through her because she knows how to score when she’s open and she knows how to kick it out when she’s getting double-teamed.”
The Jaguars open their season with a home exhibition game on Nov. 2 against Indiana University Kokomo and have their first official game on Nov. 6 as they take on Purdue Northwest at the Jungle.

The IUPUI volleyball team opened Horizon League play Friday night with a loss to UIC by a score of 3-1. The Jaguars took the victory in the first set 25-20, then lost the last three sets 25-22, 28-26, and 25-16.
The first set was narrow up until the 11-11 score, when IUPUI went on a 6-0 scoring run to give the Jaguars a 17-11 lead. The Jaguars used that run for the rest of the set to give them the 25-20 victory. The Jaguars were led by the sophomore Maddie Dean and junior McKayla Wright, both with five kills in the set.
The second set started off the same as the first set, the score was close up until UIC went on a 4-0 scoring run to give the Flames a 15-13 edge in the middle of the set. The Jaguars kept the set close throughout, but the nine errors they committed to UIC’s three errors was the difference maker in the end. Senior Elizabeth Scott led the Jaguars in the second set with four kills.
“We were a little up and down in some of the sets,” Scott said. “We had good energy, and we were being scrappy getting the ball, so we just pull everybody together playing on all cylinders, we’ll figure it out.”
The third set, same as the previous two, was close throughout. Scott came up clutch for the Jaguars down the stretch, hammering home three straight aces to tie the game at 22. Errors killed the Jaguars for the last six points. They committed three crucial errors in the end gave UIC the 28-26 set win. The Jaguars were led by Senior Abby Boatman with four kills and Senior Elizabeth Scott with three kills.
“I thought we came out fighting a lot harder than we did in preseason,” Rebecca Schlechte said. “In preseason, I think we had a lot of mental issues that we needed to work out and I feel like we all came out tonight to play really hard. They had a couple of runs each game, and that was the difference.”
IUPUI came out flat in the fourth set, allowing UIC to open the set on a 7-1 run. The Jaguars weren’t willing to give up so easy and came back with a 7-2 run of their own to make the score 13-11,the closest they would get. UIC went on another 6-2 run that ended up being the difference maker in the 25-16 victory.
“Well I thought we started really strong and energetic, and I thought we were playing well,” Coach Steve Payne said. “It’s ok to lose that one second set, but the third set I thought we just kinda lost winners, and our momentum after we lost that extra point set. In set four, we came in kinda down and we weren’t ready to go.”
Scott led the way for the Jaguars with 12 kills, followed by McKayla Wright and Haley Hoffman both with 11. Dean led the way in blocks with 5. Schlechte led the way in assists with 48 and Rhiannon Schuenemann led the way in digs with 18.
IUPUI continues conference play with a home game on Saturday, Sept. 22 against Green Bay.
