In the last several weeks, students at universities across the U.S. have been setting up pro-Palestinian divestment encampments, and IUPUI is no exception. On April 26, IUPUI students set up their divestment encampment in Democracy Plaza below the Kelley School of Business building by Taylor Hall following the establishment of an encampment on IU Bloomington campus.

On April 16, a vote of no confidence presented by Bloomington’s Faculty Council will be held against IU’s current president, Pamela Whitten, provost, Rahul Shrivastav and vice provost of faculty and academic affairs, Carrie Docherty. As IUPUI approaches a pivotal point in its history with the split, the unrest within leadership could disturb the continued cultivation of IUPUI’s campus.

On Feb. 12, Latha Ramchand officially took her place as the inaugural chancellor of IU Indianapolis. She met with students, faculty and staff at a welcome reception, and had meetings with various groups on campus. Among her other activities, The Campus Citizen was invited to interview Ramchand on her first day in office.

Throughout history, there have been various international events that have shaped the way we interact with the world around us. Especially within the legal system, these types of events hold even more imminent ramifications in regards to how the justice system operates. The weight of this history is upheld by a new student organization, Jews and Allies, through McKinney School of Law at IUPUI. Jews & Allies hosted a symposium on Thursday, Jan. 25, along with the opening of an exhibition in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Big Gay Halloween is one market in a continuing series of installments, allowing local queer artists and vendors to showcase their work. The initial goal behind the creation of the first market in July 2021 was to expand upon safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community in Indianapolis. The original market and a few after were organized by Meghan Curran (she/her), but leadership was taken over by Hannah Hadley-Maxwell (she/her) in August 2022.

Halloween is the perfect opportunity to have an event where students are able to socialize and get involved in their local community. In light of this, IUPUI’s Health and Wellness Promotion teamed up with the Prevention Peer Education Program (PPEP) to put on an “Ooky Spooky Halloween Ball,”on Oct. 26, which collected donations for The Julian Center.

A large part of what we do as students is read. From elementary school to college, reading is a fundamental part of our education. However, many states have imposed severe book bans in schools, including literature related to race, gender and sexuality. As a future librarian, I am of the mind that states should not be imposing book bans in this way, as it limits our education system.

IUPUI’s volleyball team starts the season with six wins and five losses thus far. Despite starting with a lead in their first few games, the Jags fell hard at the Coyote Classics losing 3-0 to South Florida, South Dakota and Drake. They made a comeback winning 3-1 to Southern Indiana and continued the streak beating Indiana State 3-1.

With Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling coming out this summer, we, Abby Godsen (copy editor and reporter) and Jackie Bozinovski (reporter and Abby’s roommate), decided it would be a great idea to rewatch and rank (almost) all of the Barbie movies to date in celebration. Because there are so many Barbie movies to date, the reviews and rankings of the movies we watched were divided into three main sections: princess movies, fairy movies and mermaid movies. In the fourth part there will be a final overall ranking of all the movies watched and reviews for any movies that did not make it into the first three articles.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) at IUPUI cites their mission as being, “committed to improving the student experience by representing the student body, supporting student-led organizations on campus, addressing student concerns." According to their site, USG provides a platform for student involvement, while providing education surrounding social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion.

A trend I have noticed on TikTok over the past few years is the upsweep in content discussing neurodiversity and what it is like to live with these diagnoses. I am someone with ADHD, dyslexia, PTSD, anxiety and depression, as well as chronic health issues i.e., postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and Hashimoto’s disease, so I am all for the de-stigmatization of these conditions, and more, through healthy conversations.
