In a statement Wednesday via IU Today, it was announced that the chancellor position remains unfilled. Even though two more finalists were presented to campus earlier this month, no one has been hired to fill the role.

The statement reads, "After rigorous efforts this year to identify IUPUI’s new chancellor, the pivotal position was not filled."

This brings the total to six candidates that have been selected as finalists and presented to campus but not chosen for the position.

In a previous article about the latest round of candidates, IU Spokesperson Chuck Carney shared that Interim Chancellor Andrew Klein was not a candidate at the time, but did not rule out the possibility of him applying in the future.

"Interim Chancellor Klein has made clear he is not a candidate during this round," Carney said. "We appreciate his willingness to serve during this time.”

In the IU Today statement, President Pamela Whitten spoke highly of Interim Chancellor Klein.

“As a strong interim leader, Andy is making strides and paving the way for our next chancellor,” Whitten said. “As I have shared with the IUPUI community, the role is critical both to the continued success and aspirational goals for one of the nation’s top urban campuses and to Indiana University as a whole.”

Unlike IU's search for a new president, the search will not continue over the summer.

April marks nine months since the chancellor search began, already surpassing the largely-criticized lengthy search for IU's new president. By putting the search on hold until the fall, this puts the timeline for the chancellor search at over a year.

The executive search committee was formed on July 29, 2021 when Chancellor Paydar announced his retirement and the search is expected to continue in August.

"We will take all the time necessary to make the right call for the IUPUI chancellor position, as we have done with all of our leadership hires, because so much is at stake for our students, faculty, staff and the community as a whole,” President Whitten said.

Updated: As of April 29, the Executive Search website has been taken offline, implying no more applicants will be accepted until the fall.
