Midwest Moto Society and Black Circle Brewing Co. will be hosting International Female Ride Day 2019 on Saturday, May 4. This event will include local artists and entrepreneurs, food from Elena Ruz Cuban Cuisine, a special appearance from BCBC’s resident drag performers, a raffle, and of course, exciting ride routes.
The Indiana Youth Group will be celebrating with International Female Ride Day and are the recipients of this year’s proceeds. Midwest Moto Society and Black Circle Brewing Co. invite you to come out and support local businesses, give back to the community, and celebrate women who ride.
Founder, Vicki Gray, introduced International Female Ride Day in 2007 as “JUST RIDE!” Gray is affiliated with Motoress, the #1 global online women’s motorcycling magazine, and is described as someone who is fully submerged in motorcycling. She has participated in all aspects of motorcycling and has even taught police in the Caribbean (Netherlands Antilles), how to ride.
International Female Ride Day is the only global women’s motorcycle event and takes place the first Saturday of May every year. IFRD has been a success due to women around the world and is seen as an important mechanism for the motorcycle industry.
This event has been in Indy for the past five years. The tagline for IFRD is “Just Ride,” but Indianapolis takes this day a step further by using it as an opportunity to give back as well.
“We choose host a day to celebrate women who ride while also using it as an opportunity to support local businesses and artists and giving back to the community as well. Black Circle Brewing Company, which is notorious for being involved in the community, is the location for the ride this year,” says host representative Julia Lagenour.
Local artists will be allowed to vend their creations, and proceeds will go to Indiana Youth Group, a nonprofit organization for the LGBT youth. Black Circle Brewing Co.’s resident drag performers will also be putting on a show during the event and giving their tips to IYG.
“This event is so important because it shows how so many independent and underrepresented communities can come together and celebrate and support each other,” says Lagenour.
You can find more specifics about this event and the ride routes on the International Female Ride Day 2019 –Indy Facebook page.

According to aids.gov, over 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV. Amongst these 1 million, an estimated 51% (31,300) people aged 13-24 living with HIV didn’t know. Amid this group of 13-24 who were diagnosed with HIV in 2013, 78% were linked to care within 3 months—the lowest rate of any age group (CDC). It is important for everyone to know the status of their health and IUPUI is giving numerous opportunities to do it for free.
The Office of Health and Wellness Promotion, MCPHD, the Bell Flower Clinic, Damien Center and the IU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health are all in collaboration to bring you Know Your Status free HIV/STI testing. The free testing event will take place in the Campus Center Atrium on Thursday, April 11 and Thursday, May 2 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
When we can’t see things, we tend to ignore them. When left untreated, some STIs can lead to more serious infections and can sometimes be fatal. IUPUI gives you the opportunity to reduce your risk. Know Your Status free HIV/STI testing is a monthly event held on the first Thursday of September-December and February-May. This free testing provides wellness screenings and pregnancy tests. Testing can take between 10-15 minutes, it is confidential and done by The Damien Center, The Bell Flower Clinic, and the IU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health.

Whether you are an upper or lower classmen, we have all experienced some sort of stress in our college career. This stress could be caused bya number of things: important tests, a presentation in your worst class, group partners not pulling their weight, you name it. These are all common occurrences in college and sometimes you can feel on edge for days about it.
“The practice of mindfulness can have a significant impact on the way we respond to our environment and to ourselves, which can allow us to better manage stress and be more present in our lives,” CAPS staff counselor Monica Villalta-Rabb.“Though meditation is not the only means by which one can cultivate mindfulness, we offer the Mindfulness Meditation Workshop because meditation can be a very useful modality in which to begin to practice the intention of mindfulness, which is attending to the present moment with openness and acceptance.”
Since the fall of 2015, a Mindfulness Meditation workshop has been offered on a weekly basis. Mindfulness Meditation is an event offered by CAPS to the students of IUPUI. The workshop meets every Friday from 11-11:45 a.m. in CAPS suite 220 in their conference room. Throughout the 45-minutes, students can participate in a variety of mindfulness meditation practice guided by a CAPS clinician.
The CAPS meditation guides experience varies from person to person, but each guide has some degree of personal and professional experience with mindfulness meditation. Many of these guides facilitate other mindfulness groups and trainings outside of the Friday session.
Students do not lead the mindfulness meditation workshop but are encouraged to get together and talk about their experience with the practice. “This workshop is only facilitated by CAPS staff and clinicians-in-training, however, there are opportunities for students to reflect with one another on their experiences with the meditation practices during the workshop each week,” says Rabb.
Mindfulness meditation is described as an intentional practice of mindfulness, in which we bring attention to our experience in the moment with acceptance and non-judgment. It is not about emptying the mind, reaching a particular emotion state, or trying to push away thoughts, but rather bringing open awareness to our thoughts and experiences while seeking to maintain our focus on the here and now. This workshop was developed as a collaboration amongst CAPS staff based on what they saw as a need they could meet for IUPUI students.
This meditation session does not require anything but a student ID. “Students are not expected to bring anything in particular with them. We typically engage in meditation practice seated or lying on the floor and we provide yoga mats and meditation cushions to facilitate doing that comfortably. However, if any students have their own mats or cushions that they would prefer to use, they are welcome to bring them,” says Rabb
For those students who may not be able to make the Friday meetings Healthy IU offers mindfulness meditation based on programming you can find out more by visiting: https://healthy.iu.edu/campus-programs-services/university/mindful.html

Sexual Assault Prevention, Intervention, & Response (SAPIR) Task Force, is a coordinating council that plays a key role in making the campus a safer place. Every April, SAPIR offers a month of events dedicated to Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). This year’s SAAM campaign focuses on the power of asking for consent. You can join IUPUI and its community in raising awareness about sexual violence, celebrating survivors, and educating each other by checking out some of this month’s events!
SAPIR will begin Sexual Assault Awareness Month with speaker Tricia Benitez, drug and addiction treatment specialist with Addictions Campuses in Nashville, Tennessee. The fresh market was first introduced to IUPUI’s campus in 2012 as a way to aid Healthy IU in bringing awareness to locally grown food and its benefits.
The next time you can visit the Fresh Produce Market in IUPUI’s Campus Center is Feb. 21. The set up will be located on the first floor in front of the new Market from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The market offers a variety of local fruits and veggies that change with the season. The market also includes a chef's sampling and a take-home kit for purchase, and (on occasion) a chef created lunch item created from food available for sale at the pop-up.
Healthy IU’s website encourages students and staff to “Bring a friend and grab some fresh produce at-cost (no price markups!)at the IUPUI Fresh Produce Market! The market offers a variety of local fruits and veggies that change with the season.”
The idea of a fresh produce market on campus was composed through the collaboration and support of IUPUI Food Services (Chartwells), Healthy IU, IUPUI Office of Sustainability, and the University College wellness committee which includes: Office of Auxiliary Services, University College, Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, IUPUI Campus Health, Office of Campus Facility Services, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, IU School of Medicine Wellness Committee, Human Resources Administration, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, School of Physical Education and Tourism Management.
Since its creation in 2012, the event has taken place the third Thursday of every month (adjusted as needed for holidays, events, etc.) It used to be held inside the food court of the campus center, but with the construction, the fresh produce market can be seen on the first floor outside of the new “Market.” On occasion, a mini set up is provided at Tower Dining by IUPUI Food Services.
During the growing season, the locally grown produce featured and sold in the market is provided by IUPUI’s own gardens. We have two campus gardens the Central Garden and the New York Street Garden, both managed by DIGS (Developing IUPUI Gardens Sustainability) . Chartwells’ local distributor Piazza Produce also helps supply fresh produce to the monthly market. Piazza is a sustainability-driven company, that offers a variety of produce and specialty items, all of the highest quality within our community.
