Post-IUPUI split, the first cohort of Purdue University in Indianapolis (PUI) students have been welcomed onto campus, with first-year students participating in a decades old tradition: Boiler Gold Rush (BGR).

On July 1, 2024, IUPUI will cease to exist as a merged campus, and it will split to become Indiana University Indianapolis (IU Indianapolis/IUI) and Purdue University in Indianapolis. This has caused a whirlwind of confusion among both IU and Purdue students, faculty and staff. Although there are still a lot of questions that remain unanswered, both IU and Purdue have begun to address multiple aspects of the split.

This year, Banned Books Week took place from Oct. 1-7. The Indianapolis Public Library kicked off the week with a discussion featuring John Green at the central location on Oct. 2.

The 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer's in Indianapolis was held at Carroll Stadium on Sept. 30. At the time of the event, over $1.1 million had already been raised, surpassing the record of over $1 million that was achieved in 2022.

Two new exhibitions opened at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI on March 22. “Pen Pals” was created by Sydney Craig, a professor of the foundations program, and Jared Cru Smith, the sculpture facilities manager. “It’s the only life that I’ve ever known” was curated by Robert Horvath, a painting professor.

Students gathered in the campus center for drag bingo hosted by Health and Wellness, the Multicultural Center, and the LGBTQ+ Center on Oct. 13. Drag queen Ana Crusis was the bingo announcer for the night.

Insomnia Cookies opened a new location near IUPUI Campus in the strip mall by Lockefield Gardens and the Avenue. They held their grand opening on Jan. 14 giving away gift bags with coupons and other items during the event.

Student readings at IUPUI have existed in a variety of different spaces and forms over the years, but have continued to run with the purpose of allowing students to share their creative works. At readings, students are welcome to share their poetry, fiction and musical works. The readings moved to the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library for the first time this semester, at the reading on Dec. 7.

The Office of the Chancellor has announced a new initiative, the Chancellor’s Student Mental Health Council, which began accepting applications on Dec. 16. According to the website, “The newly established Chancellor’s Student Mental Health Council connects decision-makers and students in the interest of ensuring student health and well-being.”

Despite the rainy weather, around 15,000 participants competed in the 5k, half marathon, marathon, and wheelchair races on November 5. Multiple athletes who competed in the Olympic trials, along with Luis Orta, who placed second in the marathon and competed in the 2016 Olympics. Jacob Heslington was the male marathon winner with a time of 2:18:56. Jennifer Pope was the female marathon winner with a time of 2:37:22. Tom Anderson won the male half marathon with a time of 1:03:34. Lauren Hurley beat the women's half marathon race record with a time of 1:09:49. The previous record was set by Molly Grabill last year at 1:10:43.
