Chreece Profile: MF Goon

Heads up! This article was imported from a previous version of The Campus Citizen. If you notice any issues, please let us know.

MF Goon

MF Goon is a rapper from St. Augustine, Fla., who was brought up to perform by Oreo Jones. Goon was introduced to Ghost Gun Summer by Andy D. The respect he gets from these rappers is hugely deserved.

Goon brought the energy during his set at Joyful Noise and got the audience jumping with him. The energy that he was used to from his days in punk rock bands carried over to his performance as a hip-hop artist.

Indianapolis might be Goon’s next home, as he was telling everyone he plans to move here as soon as he can. Right now he is on tour opening for Ghost Gun Summer.

We caught up with Goon during a show in Fountain Square Plaza. Goon discusses his love of rap and now of Indianapolis.

Where are you from?
St. Augustine, Fla. This is my first time in Indianapolis.

How different is Indy?
The biggest thing is the community around here is so inviting. The art is so exciting.

Is this your first hip-hop festival?
Yeah, mine and Indianapolis’.

When did you start rapping?
Two years ago I opened a rap show in Florida, and I’ve been hooked ever since!

What makes you love this art form?
I didn’t start listening to hip-hop until about three years ago. I started listening to it because it was the only thing that could keep me awake at work. I started rapping for jokes, [then] Ghost Gun Summer came to St. Augustine a few years ago, and Oreo Jones told me, “Whatever you do, Goon, don’t stop rapping.” That was such an honor for him to say that, so that was it for me. I’ve been in punk bands, I’ve been in all kinds of bands, but the energy of hip-hop is so much better. You’re up there all by yourself, and you have to give it everything to get the crowd’s response.

What’s performing like?
Once I get done with a set I have really bad vertigo. I can’t see straight--it’s like I did a million drugs. It’s the most intense release.

How did you feel about Chreece?
Chreece was so much more than I thought it would be. I knew it was going to go off, but I never expected it to be this good. I’m trying to move up to Indianapolis now! The scene is just so great, I really want to live here.
