Earlier this year, schools across the country saw a steep increase in cuts to “DEI” programs by the Trump Administration. Now student programs are either being cut, relocated, or losing funding as a result of state and national funding cuts.

Both the LGBTQ+ Center and Multicultural Center, which were originally located on the first floor of Taylor Hall, have been  potentially relocated and replaced by the Office of Health and Wellness Promotion and The Multimedia Production Center.

Although there has been no specific confirmation on where they might be relocated to, there has also not been an official press release stating that the offices are no longer accessible to students. However, the IU Indianapolis website pages have been taken down for both the LGBTQ+ center and the Multicultural Center.

In reaching out to both the Office of Student Affairs and IU Indianapolis’ Media Relations, we were not able to gain any additional details about what will be happening to the resources from the LGBTQ+ Center and Multicultural Centers, as well as if they are actually being relocated or if the programs were suspended entirely.

Both offices were originally created with the intent to foster community for the diverse student populations on the former IUPUI campus. The Multicultural Center specifically was founded by calls to action by IUPUI students.

“The Multicultural Center is dedicated to promoting student development and support through diversity education and multicultural awareness…. Using an inclusion with focus approach, the MC is committed to developing a supportive and inclusive campus culture that celebrates diversity and multiculturalism,” according to their Spot page.

Similarly, the LGBTQ+ center was created to support beliefs of inclusion and support student experiences of the IU Indianapolis community.

“The LGBTQ+ center is an inclusive campus community that welcomes people of all identities and provides support, resources, and advocacy to IU Indianapolis students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the surrounding community…. The center facilitates LGBTQ+ visibility by promoting and enhancing understanding, acceptance, and awareness through collaborative relationships, LGBTQ+ allyship trainings, and education/programmatic initiatives,” said the IU Indianapolis LGBTQ+ Center Spot page.

Although these spaces may not be as directly accessible as they were before, there are still resources and organizations on campus that support diversity and inclusion.

The Queer Student Union (QSU), originally based in the LGBTQ+ center, has relocated to the Cube in the Campus Center and weekly meetings to provide community and resources for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Additionally, there are many cultural student organizations on campus like The African Student Association at IU Indianapolis, Black Student Union, Ethnic’s Mental Wellness Association, International Club, Middle Eastern Student Association (MESA), Swadesh and many more which offer students opportunities to find community with those of similar and different backgrounds than themselves, all of which can be found on The Spot.

There are also community centered resources that exist outside of campus that students can access such as: Damien Center, Indiana Transgender Network, OutCare Health, PFLAG Indy, La Plaza Indy, Indy Liberation Center, Indianapolis Urban League, International Center, etc. which foster diversity and inclusion in the Indianapolis community.
