On the cusp of a perfect season, IU entered in prime position to win its first college football championship in its history, a remarkable feat considering the downtrodden state the program has been in throughout its history. The Hoosiers began the season as the program with the worst record in college football history. No hyperbole needed: IU entered the season with an all-time record of 715 program losses.

The Colts haven't reached the playoffs since 2020, when they were eliminated in the wild card round. Despite a 7-1 start that gave them the league's best record in the 2025 season and first place in the AFC South, the team couldn't maintain that success, finding themselves out of playoff contention.
