A Rough End to the Season for IUPUI Men's Basketball

With the final two home games left, IUPUI’s Men’s basketball team is looking for some positive wins going into the Horizon League tournament.

The season has not been the best for the team. They are last in the Horizon League standings and are placed No.358 in the College Basketball rankings, labeling IUPUI as the worst Division one team in the NCAA.

Sophomore Bakari LaStrap is averaging 8.5 points a game. He had 10 points in the loss against Youngstown State. The season has been filled with losses and not enough wins.

“It’s been a tough season and I have just tried to stay positive,” LaStrap said. “I am a positive guy and I try to stay positive. It’s tough to be on social media due to the criticism, so I use the internet to fuel my game.” Senior Jonah Carrasco is averaging four points a game. He has not played due to a foot injury.

“For these past few weeks, the team is taking practice pretty lightly,” Carrasco said. “What that means is we are trying to avoid contact as much as possible because of the injury since we are short of the usual numbers.”

On February 6th, the IUPUI Men’s Basketball was sent out stating that the team was looking for IUPUI students who were interested in joining the team for the remaining part of the season. The tweet was later taken down.

Both Carrasco and LaStrap were shocked by the tweet.

“I think the media took this out of context,” Carrasco said.“It also really got out of hand. This tweet was intended to find practice players and we knew we needed practice players.”

LasStrap added,

“ I was frustrated and blindsided and we just needed to bring on practice players, not any new players,” he said.

The team still has not found any practice players.

“We just want to compete, we have the heart and soul, and we are taking it one team at a time. We want to play together to win these final two games,” Cuarssco said.
