Delta Sigma Phi is going to be hosting their annual philanthropy event Queen of the Canal, which will take place Nov. 11 in the lecture hall on IUPUI’s campus at 7 p.m.

Sororities will be competing in the fraternity hosted event for charity. There will be a contestant from each sorority performing a lip sync or a dance that involves them and other members from their sorority. The winner will be decided based on the talent portion, how much money their sorority raised and overall participation from each of the events that Delta Sigma Phi has hosted throughout the semester.

Alzheimer’s disease is something that affects many people including members of Delta Sigma Phi. Throughout the years the event has changed names from Queen of the Nile to Deltapalooza and now Queen of the Canal, but what has not changed over the past couple of years is their philanthropy has supported the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ryan Depew, who is a business management major and will graduate in 2024, is in charge of philanthropy for Delta Sigma Phi.

“We have been raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association since 2016. Since 2016 we have raised over $88,000 for the association,” Depew said.

According to Depew, Delta Sigma Phi has been one of the top donors for the Alzheimer’s association. The cause is something that is important to them and is something that affects some of their members directly. Alzheimer’s is something that is not curable at the moment, but they want to be a part of changing that.

“We had a brother’s grandfather that was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s,” Depew said. “We have stuck with this philanthropy for the past six years because we have realized that several brothers in the fraternity have been affected by Alzheimer’s.”

This event brings Delta Sigma Phi and its members closer together with the sororities on campus due to their participation in the competition. So while they are raising money for a good cause, it allows them to get to know each other better and unites them to achieve one goal together.

“I personally feel that our event is different from other philanthropy events held on campus because our event incorporates participation from all six sororities on campus,” Depew stated. ”The sororities can earn points by participating in events, fundraising and creating a team for Queen of the Canal.”

Adding the competitive element makes things more interesting and gives the sororities more motivation to raise more money. Being one of the top donors for the Alzheimer’s association is a big deal to Delta Sigma Phi. Delta Sigma Phi takes pride in letting people know that every single cent they raise goes right back to the Alzheimer’s association.Trey Graber, the president of Delta Sigma Phi explains where the proceeds go.

“We donate 100% of the proceeds that we make from our event, and it goes straight back to the organization,” Graber said.

Last year Delta Sigma Phi raised over $24,000 for the Alzheimer’s association. This year their goal is to beat that.

“Our goal this year is to raise $25,000. We are aiming to raise more money than in previous years,” Graber said. “Our goal is set high, but we are determined to raise money for a great cause.”
