The Indianapolis Colts currently hold the number 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and after releasing Matt Ryan they will be looking to take a quarterback with that pick. The Colts most recent first-round drafted quarterback was in 2012 when we took Andrew Luck. From 2012 till his sudden retirement in 2019 he was the starter until the team entered quarterback purgatory with Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan all coming in for one year and accomplishing a single playoff appearance between the three quarterbacks.
The combine which was recently held in Indianapolis hosted many new faces that are ready to take the stage in the NFL. The main name that has stuck out to the Colts has been that of Anthony Richardson. The 6’4”, 244 pound athlete, posted jaw–dropping physical stats at the combine which made analysts question if he might go number one to the Carolina Panthers. He would run a 4.43 second 40 yard dash as well as post a 40.5 inch vertical jump, which is a new combine record for a quarterback.
While Bryce Young and CJ Stroud are the main two quarterbacks that everyone has talked about and while they were number 1 and 2 in Production rating, Richardson ended up first in athleticism.
Other positions that will be looked at for the team are Offensive Linemen (OL) and Wide Receivers (WR). One big name coming from Ohio State is Dawand Jones, an Indianapolis native graduating from Ben Davis High School in 2019. At 6’8” 365 pounds, Jones impressed many scouts on senior day, as well as racking up one of the highest run-block ranks in the country with a 90.6. His Ohio State Counterpart Paris Johnson is looking to be the second or third OL to come off the board after Peter Skoronski from Northwestern, who is ranked as the number one offensive lineman in the country.
Wide Receiver Tyquan Thorton ran a 4.28 40 yard dash which is insanely fast and eight all time for wide receivers. The Texans are projected to grab the first wide receiver off the board in Jaxon Smith-Njigba from Ohio State. While wide receivers are not the main focus, it could turn into one if the Colts can put together a trade for Lamar Jackson.
The 2019 MVP is currently extremely disgruntled with the Ravens after they refused to work out a contract that is good enough to keep an MVP as their franchise standout. Jackson requested a trade on March 2. If they were to make a trade with the Colts, then the 4th pick would most likely end up in Baltimore, but the Colts have more than enough cap room to sign Jackson.
The Colts have been in Quarterback Purgatory after Andrew Luck's sudden retirement five years ago. This is the year where the quarterback question can either be answered at the draft or in the upcoming weeks with Jackson. Whatever direction the Colts go, this is a very important offseason for the Colts and it can make or break the future of the franchise.
