The sun shined bright this past Saturday with a cast of blue skies illuminating over the canal. The once empty canal has now been filled with shiny silver canoes that held eager IUI rowers. It was the 17th annual IU Indianapolis Regatta and IU students swarmed the canal chanting for their favorite teams.
Every year at the end of September, IU Indianapolis hosts Regatta, which brings students, parents and community members together. This year marked the 17th annual Regatta.
The 17th annual IU Regatta drew students, families and community members Sept. 27 to the Indianapolis Canal for a day of racing, music, activities and food. The event, hosted by the Division of Student Affairs, featured canoe races, a scavenger hunt, live entertainment and tents with hands-on activities.
One of the biggest events at Indiana University of Indianapolis, Regatta, features canoe races that happen throughout the day. The 2025 team winners are: Female: Gum D-Seas, Male: Canine Kings and Co-Ed: Brushing Besties.
Long rehearsals, creative choreography, schedules and teamwork all lead to one moment: the Regatta stage. For groups such as The Moving Company and Xiphos, that stage is their finish line.

IU Indianapolis alumna Emily Mellentine has been building community and connection among women and LGBTQ+ groups in Indianapolis. Mellentine graduated in 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a minor in women’s, gender and sexuality studies and a certificate in public relations.

On April 4, Jelena Liu, a graduate student at IU Indianapolis, had her Service ID wrongfully revoked with no warning from the Student and Exchange Visitors Information System (SEVIS) record system. “I was checking my email box and I got a surprise gift,” Liu said. Liu is not an isolated case. Five more students from Purdue University, one student from Ivy Tech and one student from the University of Notre Dame have had their visas revoked.
Clara Brizendine, an environmental science major, walks through the cool air around campus every Monday and Tuesday to look for dead birds that have crashed into campus buildings. During her walks, she finds two to three lifeless birds in the bushes. She takes notes on what building they have flown into, the time she found them, and the type of bird. Brizendine, a junior at IUI, is an intern participating in the The Bird Window Strike Project with the Center of Earth and Environmental Science (CEES). A program whose mission statement explains that its goal is to grow leaders in environment growth and natural resources management.

IU Indianapolis is home to the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, one of the only philanthropy schools in the nation. In the pursuit to provide students with the opportunity to study philanthropy, the school offers students the opportunity to win scholarships through the Pitch Your Passion competition. A scholarship competition for high school seniors and college students with less than 60 credit hours, Pitch Your Passion gives students the opportunity to share a small group presentation about an issue in their community they care about.
