First Friday: Art Drop

Heads up! This article was imported from a previous version of The Campus Citizen. If you notice any issues, please let us know.

While walking around Indianapolis, start keeping an eye out for some special pieces of art hidden in some unlikely places.

On the first Friday of every month, artists of any level can participate in First Friday Art Drop. Branching off from World Art Drop Day (First Tuesday of September), this local version allows participants to create a piece of art, hide it, and leave clues on their social media for a stranger to find using #myartdrop and #artdropindy.

Steve Witta, the organizer of the Indy event, tells The Campus Citizen there is more to this event than the art itself.

“It can be a doodle, a bar of soap, a scarf, just something you create,” he said. “It is really meant to bring a smile to a stranger.”

Witta started with a group of 10 participants for the first monthly event a month and a half ago and he has seen it grow to almost 100 participant in time for World Art Drop day on Sept. 4.

ArtMix, a local art organization, was one of the first to partner up with Witta to bring this event to life. Katy Deadmond, Manager of Community Outreach at ArtMix, felt that this event fit well with their mission.

“Artmix transforms the lives of people with disabilities through art,” she said.

Most of their students came from their Urban Artisans program which is comprised of those 16 to 22 years of age who are transitioning from school to the workforce. Events like this allow the students to have their art seen without stigma.

“It is art that just happens to be made by someone with a disability.”

Witta has also garnered some interest from national and international artists to participate through virtual drops. That means an artist sends a creation to the organizer who hides it for them but gives they’ll still be the one posting clues to their social media. Witta has received art from California, the United Kingdom and France to name a few.

He envisions this event continue to grow on campuses and in the city. Most importantly, he hopes to spread joy to others. “Go find your smile,” he said.
