Although most campus activities and classes have returned to normal since the beginning of the pandemic, one question that has sparked debate among undergraduate and graduate students alike has been whether or not graduates will be recognized individually by their respective schools in a smaller, more private recognition ceremony.

IUPUI has made the decision to hold a commencement ceremony for all undergraduates who choose to attend at Carroll Stadium on May 14. This is the traditional commencement ceremony, though students will not walk across the stage and be handed their diplomas or be individually recognized. Due to the size of the entire undergraduate graduating class, it is typical that students' names are not announced individually and for diplomas to be mailed to you after graduation.

Some schools and departments, such as the School of Liberal Arts, had made previous announcements that they did not have the budget to hold their own ceremonies this year. They have made announcements that they simply do not have the budget to hold a ceremony of this type, while others, like the Kelley School of Business and School of Science, have said they will be holding smaller ceremonies for their graduates where each graduate will be recognized by name and have the opportunity to walk across a stage and receive their diploma. Other schools, like the School of Education, said they will have a small reception to recognize their graduates where students and faculty will be able to talk to each other and refreshments will be provided.

Spring commencement details were announced to students on February 18 via students’ IUPUI email accounts. Since that announcement, many students have come to the realization that the all undergraduate ceremony is only a recognition of the schools and students will not be recognized individually or be able to walk across the stage as they receive their diplomas. Because of this, many students started petitions to be able to walk across the graduation stage and be recognized individually. These students say it makes all of their hard work the last four years worth it.

In light of this, each school, department, or program have chosen to hold their own smaller, more personal recognition events. The dates, times, and locations for those events are as follows:
