Every college student knows the feeling of having one million things to do and never enough time to do all of them. Many turn to energy drinks, teas and coffees to give them an extra boost. However, many students likely do not know what they are consuming, or if it is even beneficial.
Myra Kivett grew up in a musical family– she describes music as something that is in her blood and something that she “always gravitated towards”. Her most recently released song is her official debut single titled “Guys Like You,” which was recorded in Round Table Recording Studio in Broad Ripple. Kivett balances a full course load through IUPUI’s BA/MA program. Her schedule during the school year is often hectic with academics, so Kivett utilizes her summers to focus on music.
IUPUI hosted their first Drag Bingo night Oct. 14, and it started with a bang. The event was a massive success with so many students that they had to move to a bigger room to accommodate the line out the door.
While attending college, students live, work and participate in recreational activities on campus. A major concern for many of them is simply staying safe. A number of on-campus organizations have recognized this and are working towards creating such an environment, in addition to the IUPD.
Alpha Chi Omega (AXO) hosted their Volley Against Violence on Oct. 14 to raise money for the Colburn Place in their fight against domestic violence. Phi Gamma Delta won the tournament after beating AXO in the final.
Last Friday, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) held a Leadership Conference in the University Tower Ballroom from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Although the event was initially aimed at senate members of the USG, it was later opened to anyone on campus. “The leadership conference was aimed to help students engage more on campus,” according to the USG Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Clara Pineda.
Last Friday, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) met to discuss ways to improve the student experience at IUPUI. These meetings are held every Friday from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Business/SPEA (BS) 2000 and are open to all IUPUI students. They discussed a number of ideas, from resolving food insecurity to installing pharmacy vending machines on campus.
September 24th was IUPUI’s 14th annual Regatta, a traditional canoe race on the Central Canal in downtown Indianapolis. Students watched their peers compete in the canoe race, visited student organization booths in Military Park, viewed a dog costume contest and watched live performances at the Regatta Music Festival. "It was kinda upsetting that we did well but weren't allowed to compete in the finals due to them... losing our [time]... This is our last Regatta and we felt a little cheated, but we appreciated getting to have the experience," said one student.
With the 2022 midterm election just over a month away, voters across the country are making plans to vote on Nov. 8. This will be the first time many college students cast a ballot. They face a unique set of challenges, but luckily there are many resources on IUPUI’s campus dedicated to making voting more accessible to students.
TKE hosted their second annual Car Smash for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital on Wednesday. Students had the opportunity to wield a sledgehammer or baseball bat to smash an old black Pontiac Sunfire and partake in burgers, chips, or a drink.
Centered in the heart of downtown Indianapolis and home to more than 29,000 students, many choose IUPUI to remain close to home or simply enjoy the city life. However, adjusting to college can be difficult. The university helps ease the transition with a number of resources.
On Tuesday evening, the IU Natatorium was filled for a competition between student organizations called Battleships. The event was hosted by Jagathon: IUPUI’s Dance Marathon, to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children. Around 250 spectators attended the event.
Many people feel like life is returning to normal in the wake of lifted mask mandates and more events on campus regaining their in-person status for the first time in over two years. But for many students, the sustained isolation has affected them for the long haul, and it’s something that lifted restrictions and a vaccine can’t cure.
On Thursday, the Indianapolis Society of the Classical Guitar held their first concert of the 2022-2023 series in the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex at IUPUI, featuring professional classical guitarists from around the state. Their next concert will be on October 13th and will feature the winner of the prestigious 2021 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition.
Early Friday morning IU and Purdue University administrators announced that IUPUI would once again split into two separate universities. IUPUC could be next.
On June 10th, Purdue President Mitch Daniels announced he would retire at the end of the year and announced his successor. This continues the retirement wave among high profile university presidents in recent years.
IU made the transition to Outlook in May in response to Google's price increase last year.
The Sagamore, IUPUI's old student-run news publication, ran from 1971 to 2009. It shuttered in 2009 for a number of reasons. The established difficulties of print journalism combined with administrative overreach produced a paper in an existential crisis - that lost its appeal to writers and readers. But it didn't have to happen. In fact, a former Sagamore editor successfully prevented it from shutting down thirty years before.
Jagathon: IUPUI's Dance Marathon gets a new board of leaders in preparation for their 2023 event. The group looks forward to the future and continuing to make miracles for Riley Hospital for Children.
