Big Gay Halloween is one market in a continuing series of installments, allowing local queer artists and vendors to showcase their work. The initial goal behind the creation of the first market in July 2021 was to expand upon safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community in Indianapolis.
Antisemitism, or Jewish hatred, can be traced back to the third century. This racial hostility toward the Jewish community has been a consistent theme throughout history, and perhaps the largest and most well-known antisemitic period is the Holocaust. The Indiana Historical Society museum in Indianapolis is bringing awareness and remembrance towards the recent revival of Jewish hatred with their new exhibit, “Eva Kor from Auschwitz to Indiana.” Eva Kor, Auschwitz survivor and Jewish activist, voices her experiences in the concentration camps and how these persecutions forever changed her life.
Over the past month, Muslims around the world were unified through fasting from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is one the five pillars, or tenets, of Islam, alongside having faith in one God, praying five times a day, giving charity, and making the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia (if one is physically, mentally and financially able to). There are many Hoosiers who participate in Ramadan. According to Indiana Historical Society Press, Muslim sects have established themselves in Indianapolis as early as 1926. Today, a culturally diverse Muslim population calls Indianapolis home. At IUPUI, the Muslim Student Association (MSA), Pakistani Student Association (PSA), Middle Eastern Student Association (MESA) and IUPUI International Club have all hosted iftars— meals consumed when breaking the fast, traditionally starting with a date or water and in a group setting— over the past month.
Acclimating to a new environment at IUPUI, many vegan students, or students interested in trying vegan food, may wonder how Indianapolis fares in terms of vegan cuisine. Considering Indiana’s reputation for traditional Midwestern dishes and a plethora of food deserts in and around Indianapolis, students may be surprised to learn that farmers market vendors, small business owners, local organizations and established restaurant owners have been working to increase the vegan options in Indianapolis for over a decade. One example is Soulshine Vegan Café, which is one of the only vegan breakfast spots in Indianapolis. Located in Broad Ripple, a 20 minute drive from IUPUI’s campus, Soulshine provides a welcoming space to relax, study and enjoy a variety of vegan menu items, with its mission of making veganism more accessible.

The most impactful facet of show choir is its effect on inspiring the next generation of performers to carry on its legacy of entertainment as well as embrace the same friendly yet competitive spirit that makes the performing art so distinctive.
Over the last few months, there have been a variety of House and Senate bills presented in Indiana courts related to the LBGTQ+ community. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is currently tracking 451 bills of this type across the country. It is one of the major art museums located in Indianapolis and is home to paintings, sculptures, clothing and more.The Eiteljorg Museum seeks to reward IUPUI students who are looking to enrich themselves in cultures different from their own by giving them an opportunity to do so for free.
Researchers have found that animal connection helps relieve stress; the Nine Lives Cat Café assists in this manner. The café is located ten minutes from campus in the Fountain Square area. The cat café has seen over 1,500 adoptions, and there is no shortage of stories ending with a happy ever after for cats that are worth sharing.
Insomnia Cookies opened near IUPUI Campus in the strip mall by Lockefield Gardens and the Avenue. They held their grand opening on Jan. 14 giving away gift bags with coupons and other items during the event.

From antique stores to restaurants, Irvington has much to offer college students looking for something to do on the weekend. Irvington is a protected historic district east of downtown Indianapolis, just a short drive from campus. It is best known for the Irvington Halloween Festival originally established in 1927, for being Butler University’s original location in the late 1800s/early 1900s and being home to the creator of Raggedy Ann.
Despite the rainy weather, around 15,000 participants competed in the 5k, half marathon, marathon, and wheelchair races on November 5. Multiple athletes who competed in the Olympic trials, along with Luis Orta, who placed second in the marathon and competed in the 2016 Olympics. Jacob Heslington was the male marathon winner with a time of 2:18:56. Jennifer Pope was the female marathon winner with a time of 2:37:22. Tom Anderson won the male half marathon with a time of 1:03:34. Lauren Hurley beat the women's half marathon race record with a time of 1:09:49. The previous record was set by Molly Grabill last year at 1:10:43.
